Luma Skills was not born in a boardroom. It grew out of one of the largest free learning platforms in Africa.
THE MISSION
It started with a promise: free, world-class tutoring for every African learner.
Luma began as a simple idea with an uncompromising constraint. Most learners in South Africa do not have laptops, fibre or tutors. They have a phone, a bit of data, and WhatsApp. So we built a patient, curriculum-aligned AI tutor that meets them exactly there, in their own language, for free.
THE SCALE
Then it grew faster than we imagined.
More than 250,000 learners. Over 8 million lessons and tutoring interactions. Learners in 86 countries. A World Bank-funded pilot in Lesotho. Recognition from the UN and TIME. Not because of a marketing budget, but because learning that arrives where people already are gets used.
THE REALISATION
We had built something bigger than a tutor.
Under the product was a learning engine that could reach anyone with a phone: distribution to millions over WhatsApp, lessons that adapt to each person, support in many languages, and a mastery model that tracks what every individual actually understands. Then companies started calling. They had thousands of frontline workers no training system could reach, and we had spent years solving exactly that problem for learners.
